Real-Time Robot GUI Prototype
This video demonstrates how the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of a computer can be used to control a robot in real-time. The mouse commands are used as an input to analog control loop. This way, the virtual reality world of the computer is married to the real world of the robot hardware. This video is also an introduction to some relatively inexpensive PC based data acquisition and controls tools.
Radio Science for the Classroom
This video was developed to demonstrate to instructors and students how a radio transmitter works.
As part of a “Lab Before Lecture” series , we show how a kit can be constructed and provided to an instructor for use in the classroom. Education Equity and Origins of the National Science Foundation (NSF)
One hundred years ago in 1922, Raytheon started as the American Appliance Company. Soon after, they shifted the company focus to electronics.
Early in World War II, Raytheon received a contract to make magnetrons, a microwave-generating electron tube needed for radar systems that were used to detect enemy planes.
By the end of the war, Raytheon was responsible for fabricating 80% of the all magnetrons produced.
In 1944, President Roosevelt asked Raytheon founder, Vannevar Bush how to sustain the engineering progress of WWII:
“Can an effective program be proposed for discovering and developing scientific talent in American youth so that the continuing future of scientific research in this country may be assured on a level comparable to what has been done during the war?”
Vannevar Bush offered suggestions in response to President Roosevelt’s question in 1945. Bush’s suggestions were implemented in the founding of the National Science Foundation in 1950
Here are two key comments from Vannevar Bush regarding the origination of ideas, education equity and opportunities in 1945:
“Scientific progress, on a broad front, results from the free play of free intellects, working on subjects of their own choice, in the manner dictated by their curiosity for exploration of the unknown. Freedom of inquiry must be preserved…”
“Remove Barriers : Higher education in this country is largely for those who have the means. If those who have the means coincided entirely with those persons who have the talent we should not be squandering a part of our higher education those undeserving of it, nor neglecting great talent among those who fail to attend college for economic reasons.
There are talented individuals in every segment of the population, but with few exceptions those without the means of buying higher education go without it.
Here is a tremendous waste of the greatest resource of a nation — the intelligence of its citizens…”
In 1950, NSF was formed to cultivate, incentivize, subsidize fundamental research in sciences.
Now, seventy seven years later in 2022, the Beacon Engineering Consortium is founded with the same spirit of opportunity for all that will come.
The laser positioning system featured in this blog uses ideas that can be used as a precursor for training next generation of Raytheon tracking pod developers, or for cultivation of future civilian inventions that will benefit society.

This standard was converted to a commercial standard called
